Prime Minister Scott Morrison says he hopes to have a 1,000-bed quarantine facility built in Melbourne's north before the end of the year, after the Commonwealth settled on Mickleham as the site.
The facility was originally proposed by the Victorian government, which budgeted $15 million to design it and offered to run it if the Commonwealth funded construction.
